Surprise! Celeste devs drop new game to celebrate sixth anniversary

To mark the sixth anniversary of their critically-acclaimed hit game Celeste, the Canadian devs at Extremely OK Games have a special treat for fans—a surprise release of a brand new, free game available now.

Celeste has an interesting backstory. Originally created for PICO-8 in a game jam back in 2015, this platformer gained widespread popularity and was eventually released worldwide as a full game on various platforms. It received universal acclaim, becoming one of the most highly praised indie titles ever.

The game has also resonated with speedrunners, indie enthusiasts, and the LGBTQ+ community, who appreciate the main character’s story arc and support the transgender creator, Maddy Thorson.

In September 2019, Extremely OK Games released the free DLC Farewell, which added a new chapter to the adventure of Madeline and Celeste Mountain. And now, on January 30, 2024, they have announced the launch of Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain as a celebration of the game’s sixth anniversary.

This new game, available for free on itch.io, is a 3D platformer unlike the original two-dimensional version. The team managed to create it within just one week, as they mentioned on the itch.io page. You can download it for free and even access its source code on GitHub.

While some fans have reported a few bugs and crashes in the initial build, the overall response from the community has been positive. Guides are already available, and users are sharing screenshots on Twitter. It truly feels like a celebration.

Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain is currently available for Windows and Linux, with a release for MacOS coming soon. Additionally, the original Celeste game is available on multiple platforms.
