Riot Games Social Impact Fund Reaches $50M Milestone in Philanthropy

Riot Games, the creator of popular gaming titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Teamfight Tactics, announced this week that its Social Impact Fund has reached a significant milestone of $50 million raised since its inception in 2019. The fund, which is managed in partnership with ImpactAssets, has supported over 450 organizations across 28 regions in various social impact initiatives.

The Riot Games Social Impact Fund aims to improve communities across the globe through financial support generated by in-game purchases and various initiatives. The beneficiaries of the fund are chosen by the community, often through voting campaigns that involve the players themselves.

Notable achievements made by the fund include:

  • In 2019, the release of the 1000th League of Legends skin, Dawnbringer Karma, generated more than $6 million for the program.
  • The 2020 Valorant Give Back Bundle event, where players voted to bring back their favorite skins, raised $5.5 million.
  • In 2020, the fund supported communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with players raising over $2.1 million by purchasing the medical skin bundle.
  • The 2021 LoL Sentinels of Light in-game event, featuring Sentinel Olaf, raised $5.8 million.
  • For the 2021 Arcane Netflix release, 30 winning charities worldwide received a $10,000 community grant in partnership with ImpactAssets and GlobalGiving.

We sat down with a representative from Riot Games, who commented on the milestones and the Social Impact Fund’s role in the gaming industry:

“We’re thrilled to see our players and community come together to make a positive impact on the world. The $50M milestone is not only a testament to their generosity and support but also showcases our commitment to giving back. As we move forward, we plan to expand our philanthropic initiatives and continue leveraging the enthusiasm of our players to make a difference.”

Indeed, other gaming companies have taken note of Riot Games’ efforts and launched similar programs. For example, Electronic Arts has the “Play to Give” campaign, and Blizzard Entertainment introduced the “World of Warcraft Charity Pet Program” to raise funds for numerous non-profit organizations.

The $50M milestone is a significant achievement for Riot Games and the Social Impact Fund, establishing the company as a major player in the world of philanthropy within the gaming industry. With the continued support of its community and the collaborative work of the organizations they help, the fund’s future is sure to make an even more significant social impact, both in the gaming world and the global community as a whole.
