For years, fans have begged Ubisoft to remaster the beloved pirate epic, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Finally, the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has arrived. Consequently, nostalgia is running at an all-time high. However, underneath the shiny new textures lies a deeply frustrating experience. Specifically, the game is plagued by severe technical glitches and performance issues. Does the upgraded visual fidelity make up for the buggy launch? Let’s dive into our complete Black Flag Resynced review to find out.
Black Flag Resynced: Broken Performance
First of all, we have to admit that the graphical upgrades are genuinely stunning. For instance, the water physics and dynamic weather systems look breathtaking on modern hardware. Because of this, sailing the Jackdaw through a hurricane feels more immersive than ever.
Unfortunately, this visual beauty comes at a massive cost. On the PC version, players are experiencing horrific optimization. For example, even high-end gaming rigs are suffering from aggressive micro-stuttering in dense areas like Havana. Furthermore, Ubisoft bafflingly locked all cinematic cutscenes to 30 frames per second, regardless of your hardware settings. Ultimately, this jarring transition from 60FPS gameplay to 30FPS cutscenes ruins the cinematic experience in Black Flag Resynced.
The PS5 Pro and Console Glitches
It isn’t just PC players who are suffering. Similarly, console players are dealing with their own set of infuriating bugs.
The PSSR Resolution Glitch
Most notably, the PlayStation 5 Pro version launched with a massive flaw in its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) implementation. When players reload their save files, the game incorrectly reverts the anti-aliasing back to the blurry TAAU setting. Therefore, players are forced to manually reset their graphics options every single time they launch the game.
Gameplay and Physics Bugs
In addition to graphical issues, the core gameplay engine feels incredibly unstable. While boarding enemy ships, NPCs frequently clip through the floorboards. As a result, critical assassination targets become impossible to kill. Moreover, Edward Kenway will sometimes get permanently stuck in a climbing animation on the side of a galleon, forcing a hard reset. Without a doubt, these physics glitches completely break the immersion of the pirate fantasy.
The Problem With “Day-One Patch” Culture
The gaming community has grown exhausted with publishers releasing unfinished products, and this game is the prime example. Although Ubisoft rushed out Patch 1.06 on August 4th to fix the 30FPS cutscene lock, the damage to consumer trust is already done. Instead of delaying the game to polish it, the developers relied heavily on post-launch updates. Consequently, early adopters paid full price to essentially become beta testers.
The Final Verdict: 5/10 (Wait For Patches)
In conclusion, Black Flag Resynced is a massive disappointment at launch. Undeniably, the core game remains a brilliant, swashbuckling masterpiece. However, the sheer volume of technical glitches makes it incredibly difficult to recommend right now.
Pros:
- The upgraded water physics are absolutely gorgeous.
- Furthermore, the core naval combat is still incredibly fun.
Cons:
- Aggressive micro-stuttering and crashing on PC.
- Additionally, the physics engine is severely broken during ship boarding.
- Finally, the PS5 Pro resolution bug is incredibly frustrating.
