Minecraft 1.22 “The Garden Awakening” update introduced one of the most diverse mob rosters in the game’s history. But many of the most powerful and rewarding creatures in this update are completely hidden — spawning only under precise conditions that the game never directly explains to the player.
If you have been exploring for hours and cannot figure out how to encounter the rarest mobs, this is your complete minecraft secret mobs guide. We are covering every hidden spawn condition, the exact biomes you need, and the specific in-game time requirements.

1. The Verdant Stalker (Forest Cave Mob)
The Verdant Stalker is the rarest passive mob in the 1.22 update. It resembles a large, moss-covered deer with bioluminescent antlers that glow in the dark.
- Exact Spawn Condition: You must be inside a Lush Cave biome that has been completely untouched by the player — meaning zero blocks broken, zero torches placed, and zero mobs killed within a 64-block radius. The Verdant Stalker will despawn permanently the moment any of these conditions are violated.
- Why find it: Taming a Verdant Stalker (done by slowly dropping Glow Berries on the ground near it for 3 consecutive in-game nights without approaching it) rewards you with a unique mount that runs 35% faster than a standard horse and can jump 4 blocks high.
- Biome Seed Tip: If you have been unable to find a Lush Cave, open your F3 debug screen and look for the biome tag
minecraft:lush_caves. Once found, explore downward from Y=50 and listen for the distinctive hollow wind sound effect.
2. The Pale Wanderer (Moon Phase Mob)
The Pale Wanderer is a ghostly humanoid figure — the first mob in Minecraft history whose spawn is tied exclusively to the lunar cycle.
- Exact Spawn Condition: The Pale Wanderer only appears during a full moon (the game’s lunar cycle runs on a real-time 8-day loop). It exclusively spawns in the Deep Dark biome between 12,000 and 13,000 game ticks (the deepest part of the night). It will not spawn if any Sculk Sensor is within 32 blocks of the spawn point.
- The Mechanic: Unlike standard mobs, the Pale Wanderer cannot be attacked. Instead, it will approach your character slowly over the course of the night. When it reaches you, it performs an animation and drops one Pale Shard — a rare crafting material used to build the new Echo Mirror block, which reflects incoming projectiles.
- How to trigger it consistently: Use the in-game command
/time set 18000(on servers where commands are permitted) to jump directly to full moon midnight.
3. The Ember Salamander (Nether Exclusive)
The Ember Salamander is a hostile Nether mob that was specifically designed to punish players who rush through the Nether without proper preparation.
- Exact Spawn Condition: Spawns only in Basalt Deltas biomes, exclusively on Magma Block surfaces between Y=-32 and Y=0. It will never appear in Nether Wastes or Crimson Forests.
- The Danger: The Ember Salamander is immune to fire and lava. It attacks by spitting superheated magma projectiles that ignore standard Fire Resistance potions. You need the new Basalt Shield (crafted from Basalt Blocks + Iron Nuggets) to block its attacks.
- The Reward: Defeating an Ember Salamander drops Salamander Scales, which are the primary crafting ingredient for the 1.22 update’s new Thermal Armor Set — the only armor in the game that provides complete immunity to lava swimming damage.
4. The Hollow Knight Golem (Structure Mob)
The Hollow Knight Golem is a massive, fortress-sized boss mob introduced as a secret encounter inside the new Forsaken Citadel structure.
- How to find the Forsaken Citadel: This structure only generates in Jagged Peaks biomes at Y=180 or higher. It appears as a crumbling stone fortress with purple flame torches on the exterior walls. Not every Jagged Peaks biome will have one — the spawn rate is approximately 1 per 2,000 block radius.
- The Fight: The Hollow Knight Golem has 500 health points and three distinct phases. In Phase 3 (below 30% health), it will begin absorbing nearby stone blocks and using them as projectiles, effectively dismantling the structure around you.
🛡️ EXPERT TIP: MOB FARMING WITHOUT DESPAWNING
How to prevent secret mobs from despawning before you can interact with them.
All four secret mobs in 1.22 despawn if you move more than 128 blocks away from their spawn point. The safest method to farm them repeatedly without accidental despawns is to construct a small “anchor camp” within 64 blocks of the spawn location before each session. Place a bed, set your spawn point, and log out while standing inside the anchor camp. When you log back in, the game re-establishes the mob’s despawn timer from your login position rather than from a previous logout point. This effectively resets the despawn timer each session, giving you the maximum possible interaction window.
