VIGO, SPAIN — At 39 years and 40 days old, Croatian maestro Luka Modrić officially etched his name into the history books as the oldest player to ever feature in a competitive match for Real Madrid, eclipsing the 58-year-old record held by club icon Ferenc Puskás since 1966.
A Milestone Marked with Pure Footballing Artistry
Coming off the bench in the 63rd minute at Balaídos with Real Madrid locked at 1-1 against a relentless Celta Vigo, Modrić took just three minutes to prove why age is purely a number. Picking up the ball in central midfield, the Ballon d’Or winner delivered a trademark trivela-esque dissecting pass between two defenders, releasing Vinícius Júnior to round the goalkeeper and score the match-winner.
