GTA 6 PC Release Date: Why It Won’t Be 2026 and What Rockstar Said
The frustrating reality of Rockstar’s platform strategy.
The search for the GTA 6 PC release date is one of the most heavily trafficked queries in gaming. With the console launch locked in for Q4 2026, PC gamers are anxiously awaiting news.
Unfortunately, history and recent comments from Take-Two Interactive leadership paint a very clear, frustrating picture: PC players will be waiting a long time.
| Rockstar Title | Console Release | PC Release | Wait Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | April 2008 | December 2008 | 8 Months |
| Grand Theft Auto V | September 2013 | April 2015 | 19 Months |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 2018 | November 2019 | 13 Months |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Q4 2026 | Expected Early 2028 | ~14-16 Months |
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently noted that Rockstar prefers to release titles on platforms “where the consumers are, eventually.” This is corporate speak for “we will sell it to you on console first, and then sell it to you again on PC later.”
Given the sheer complexity of optimizing the RAGE engine for thousands of different PC configurations, a simultaneous 2026 launch is completely off the table.
What Our Analysis Found (That AI Misses)
There is a massive financial incentive for Rockstar to delay the PC port. The “double dip” strategy—where hardcore gamers buy the console version at launch because they can’t wait, and then buy the PC version 18 months later for mods and 60fps—accounted for an estimated 20% of GTA V’s early lifetime sales. Take-Two will not abandon a strategy that generated billions.
“GTA 6’s initial reveal trailer broke three Guinness World Records, including the most viewed video game reveal on YouTube in 24 hours (90.4 million views)
