The UEFA Champions League 36-team single league phase enters Matchday 3 with a slate of historic European fixtures that will reverberate across the continental hierarchy. At the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid host Borussia Dortmund in a dramatic rematch of the Wembley 2024 final. Twenty-four hours later, Hansi Flick faces his former club as a red-hot FC Barcelona side welcomes Bayern Munich to the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium.
Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund: Tactical Rematch at the Bernabéu
Carlo Ancelotti’s reigning champions are looking to rebound from recent European lapses. With Kylian Mbappé finding clinical synergy alongside Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham, Madrid’s counter-attacking speed remains the most lethal transition threat in world football. Dortmund, under Nuri Şahin, have displayed explosive attacking flair through Serhou Guirassy and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, but defensive vulnerabilities away from Signal Iduna Park will be severely tested under Madrid’s relentless home pressure.
Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: Flick’s Ultimate European Litmus Test
Barcelona enter Matchday 3 in sensational domestic form, firing on all cylinders with Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, and Raphinha overwhelming opponents through ferocious high-pressing lines. However, Bayern Munich—spearheaded by Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala—represent Barcelona’s traditional European boogeyman. Hansi Flick’s aggressive defensive line will require laser-focused offside trap execution against Bayern’s rapid wing play.
