Hansi Flick’s Barcelona unleashed an emphatic statement of title intent on Sunday night at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, demolishing Sevilla 5-1 to restore their three-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. On an unforgettable evening in Catalonia, Robert Lewandowski continued his lethal scoring form while Gavi made his emotional return after 348 days on the sidelines.
Clinical First-Half Blitz: Lewandowski & Pedri Ignite Montjuïc
Barcelona took control with surgical precision in the opening half-hour. In the 24th minute, Raphinha drew a foul from Peque inside the box, allowing Robert Lewandowski to calmly stutter-step and stroke his penalty into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, Barcelona doubled their advantage through a breath-taking team move. Lamine Yamal orchestrated a lightning counter-attack, feeding Jules Koundé, whose cutback found Pedri at the edge of the area to thunder an unstoppable first-time strike into the top right corner.
In the 39th minute, Lewandowski deflected a Raphinha shot past Ørjan Nyland to claim his second of the night and his 12th La Liga goal in just 10 appearances, cementing his status as Europe’s premier in-form striker.
The Emotional Return of Gavi
While Pablo Torre added a second-half brace—interrupted only by a late consolation goal from Sevilla’s Stanis Idumbo—the most resonant moment arrived in the 83rd minute. Following 11 months of rehabilitation following an ACL tear, 20-year-old midfielder Gavi stood on the touchline to a deafening standing ovation.
Pedri handed Gavi the captain’s armband as he stepped onto the pitch, marking an emotional milestone that revitalizes Barcelona’s midfield depth at the most crucial juncture of the campaign.
