I literally just watched the new Black Myth: Shan Koi trailer for the tenth time today, and my jaw is still on the floor. After dumping over 100 hours into Wukong last year and mastering every single staff stance, I thought Game Science couldn’t possibly top that combat flow. I was wrong.
The developer just dropped our very first look at the highly-anticipated follow-up, and they are making a massive, incredibly risky change: they are completely ditching the staff. Here is my breakdown of the new gameplay footage and why this grittier direction is exactly what the franchise needed.
A Darker, Grittier Atmosphere
The very first thing you notice in the new gameplay is the color palette and tone. Wukong had moments of bright, mythical wonder, but Shan Koi looks brutal. The environments we saw in the footage are drenched in shadows, fog, and blood.
It feels like Game Science is heavily leaning into a darker, almost horror-adjacent mythology this time around. The enemy designs shown in the brief combat encounters look significantly more aggressive and terrifying than the Yaoguai we fought in the first game.
Goodbye Staff Stances, Hello Sword Parries
This is the part of the trailer that had me pausing and rewinding. Instead of the iconic staff, our protagonist is wielding a sword. But it’s not just a visual swap—the entire combat engine seems to have been rebuilt around a brand new parry system.
If Wukong was all about perfect dodges and building focus for heavy attacks, Shan Koi looks like it’s pulling heavy inspiration from games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I noticed distinct metallic “clash” sparks during the enemy encounters, indicating that timing your blocks to break the enemy’s posture is going to be the core gameplay loop.
| Combat Mechanic | Black Myth: Wukong (Previous) | Black Myth: Shan Koi (New) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Extending Staff | Sword (Single-Edged) |
| Defensive Meta | Perfect Dodges & Spells (Cloud Step) | Precision Parries & Deflects |
| Offensive Style | Building Focus via 3 Stances | Posture Breaking & Visceral Strikes |
Will It Be Too Hard?
A lot of casual players struggled with the difficulty spikes in the first game, and shifting to a parry-heavy system usually raises the skill ceiling even higher. However, knowing how perfectly Game Science tuned the hitboxes in their last title, I have total faith that this sword combat is going to feel incredibly satisfying once it clicks.
I’ll be analyzing the trailer frame-by-frame on our social channels later tonight to see if I can spot any returning spells or transformations.
